Boston Marathon Training Weeks 1 & 2

It’s hard to believe it’s already time for marathon training, but here we go. I’m still chasing a PR and Coach and I have talked about changing up our training from Marine Corp and I can already tell that the training is different. I spent December base building and still did some speed work- averaging almost 40 miles a week. I honestly wasn’t in the mood. It was the holiday season and seriously ate whatever I wanted the entire month and wanted to be lazy to go along with my poor eating habits. But seeing that I’m insanely type A, I still did the work.

I used to take the time to put in plan vs. actual but from now on, unless I deviated from the plan, I’m just putting what I did.

Week 1/December 26th

Monday: 9 mile endurance run. 8:08 avg pace

Tuesday: 6×1 mile repeats. 10 min warmup, 6×1 mile (6:58, 7:02, 7:00, 7:03, 7:00, 7:02) w/400 recovery and 400m at end at full pace (1:35). 9 miles total.

We took Nanny on our annual casino trip for her 90th birthday. Rich won, Nanny unfortunately did not. img_7782Wednesday: Strength training with personal trainer (lower body focus) and 10 minute elliptical warmup

Thursday: 8x800s. 10 min warmup, 8×800 (3:18, 3:15, 3:17, 3:16, 3:19, 3:16, 3:16, 3:16) w/400 recovery. 7 miles total.

Friday: Strength training with personal trainer (upper body focus) and 10 minute elliptical warmup

Saturday: 16 mile easy long run. 8:38 avg pace- a little too fast.

Sunday: Rest day

It always seems to fall that I have a rest day on the first day of the year when most people are ready to start their mileage, I happily know that mine is coming the next day.

Total Miles for the Week: 41

Week 2/January 2nd

Monday: 7 mile endurance run in New Orleans. 7:53 avg pace. Not sure if that is correct due to satellite issues- hoping I didn’t run it that fast. It didn’t FEEL that fast.img_7832 img_7833

Tuesday: Threshold run. 3×1200 (6:36 avg pace treadmill) w/400 recovery followed by 2 miles at tempo pace (7:25). 6 miles total.

Wednesday: Strength training with personal trainer (upper body focus) and 10 minute elliptical warmup

Thursday: Fartlek run. 10 min Zone 2 warmup. 10×10 sec hard sprints on 1 min easy. 10 min Zone 2. 8:16 avg pace. 3.63 miles.

Friday: Rest day

Saturday: Progressive run. 5 mins easy, 5 mins endurance, 5 minutes goal, 5 minutes tempo. 8:00 avg pace. 2.51 miles.

One of my favorite workouts. I hope I get more of these!

Sunday: Mobile First Light 1/2 Marathon. 13.1 miles. 1:36:00.

Killed it. Thrilled with how I felt and how I executed Coach’s plan and the race.img_8014Total Miles for the Week: 32.24

Do you have a favorite workout? Least favorite? Are you doing a Spring marathon?

  • Do you remember when your current endurance pace was your race pace, because I do (or at least remember reading about it)?! You have gotten so much stronger and faster and it’s so inspiring to me!
