NCYM Training Week 19- Taper Town!

This week didn’t really feel like a taper. I had a work trip in Dallas, followed by a trip to NYC to celebrate my mom’s 60th birthday. It was fun and exhausting all at the same time. Oh, and I gained a year…the last one in the 30-34 AG.

Monday:

  • PLAN- 6 miles. 1 easy, 4 @ tempo (7:00-7:20), 1 easy
  • ACTUAL-  6 miles 8:04 pace. 7:48, 7:43, 7:22, 7:24. 

Early birthday miles before my flight to Dallas. I was off. Tired, achy and my right quad was giving me fits. As for the usual, faster on the downhill. I didn’t expect much considering I just finished my highest mileage week EVER. Trip to Dallas ended up being a nightmare because of weather delays and I was 3 hours late to my work meeting.

My sweet coworkers did surprise me at dinner with a round of “Happy Birthday” and a piece of cake.

Tuesday:

  • PLAN- rest day
  • ACTUAL- rest day

I was EXHAUSTED from all the running and celebrating and go, go, going and I slept for 9 hours. Hooray for rest days. It was much needed, especially with all day meetings.

Wednesday:

  • PLAN- 6 miles. 2 easy, 6x 20 second pickups over 3 miles, 1 mile cool down. 
  • ACTUAL- 6 miles in 51:59. 20 second pickups at 7:08 pace. 

I was so proud of myself for remembering to pack reflective gear and all my running tools until I realized I left my knuckle lights at home. Boo. I had to run super early because of work meetings so it was treadmill time. It wasn’t too bad though, the pickups helped change things up a bit and I watched House of Cards. Still sore and didn’t feel great.

Thursday:

  • PLAN- 4 easy
  • ACTUAL- 4 easy in 35:12

Back to the treadmill and more House of Cards. Another bleh run but it was fine. VERY thankful I packed the roll recovery and foam roller. I flew out of Dallas early and met my mom and sister in NYC! This was my moms first trip to New York, so we did as much as we could in 3 days. We had dinner at Carnegie Deli (we all three split the sandwich and couldn’t finish it), saw Jersey Boys on Broadway, and went to Serendipity.photo (26) IMG_9153Friday:

  • PLAN- rest day
  • ACTUAL- rest day (if you can call it that)

Friday we went to the Today show (we were on TV!), the 9/11 Museum, did the Downtown Loop of the Double Decker bus tours, and had dinner at Gramercy Tavern. LOVED seeing all of the marathon ads around the city.IMG_9159 photo (25) IMG_9163IMG_9165 IMG_9168 IMG_9173Saturday:

  • PLAN- 16 miles. First 10 easy, last 6 7:45-7:55
  • ACTUAL- 14 miles 8:40 avg pace

We used Airbnb on our trip and the location was perfect (place was terrible, otherwise). I was 1 mile from Central Park, so my plan was to run to the park and run the last few miles of the course (in addition to a bit more). I just felt off. I had to stop and stretch my glute and quad more than once but I expected it with the week I had and it all felt like a struggle.

I LOVED running in Central Park though. It’s great people watching and even though I didn’t feel great, the miles flew by. Towards the end I talked to a 2 girls who were running the marathon course too (with a charity group), and they were very sweet to show me the turns and where the finish line was going to be.IMG_9175 IMG_9184 IMG_9180I cut the run short and decided to just run and not worry about effort.

That day we had brunch with my one of my best friends from high school, Ann Marie. We followed that with shopping in Chinatown and Soho (including a visit to Alex and Ani and the Chobani store) and the North Loop of the Double Decker bus tour, and a visit to Times Square at night.IMG_9186 IMG_9188 IMG_9191Sunday:

  • PLAN- 4 miles easy/recovery
  • ACTUAL- 4 miles 8:51 avg pace

It was chilly!! Another rough run though. I ran back to Central Park for another short mile on the marathon course. I was just warming up when it was time to call it quits. We grabbed a quick breakfast and then it was time to head home.

I was VERY surprised to arrive at my sisters with a surprise birthday party with my family. Rich and Chris outdid themselves with the decorations and the food. It was a perfect way to end the birthday celebration week.IMG_9204 IMG_9208A very busy week to kick off my 34th year. So thankful for my health, family and friends who made my week so special. 33 was pretty amazing and I can’t wait to see what this year has in store for me. I didn’t love how I felt on each run but I knew that all I needed was a PT appointment and I would feel better.

  • What a full week for you! How great you got to NYC before race day. Now there’s no pressure for you to sightsee. I thought until just the other day, that we had a full loop of CP before the finish. I’m going to pretend that’s still true and maybe I can keep my head in the game. Haha!

  • I love broadway shows, Jersey Boys is one of my favorites! Sounds like a great trip you had. I haven’t been to NYC in quite awhile, would love to go back someday.

It sounds like you really made the best of you trip to NYC and sounds like a blast :) It’s been awhile since I’ve been there, but I love running in Central Park and that’s really cool that you got to run on the course so close to the race. I wouldn’t worry about feeling off the first week of the taper, it’s not too suprising following your peak week and that’s what the taper is for anyway :)

  • My husband is from Brooklyn and all his family is still there, but I only ran once in Nyc. I still need to run in central park. Somehow it never works out when we are up there. Sounds like you had a great time. Happy birthday!
