I don’t know about you, but I try and recycle my running shoes often. I’m the type of runner who has one or two pair and does everything in them-I don’t have a closet of 10 pair of running shoes. I keep one pair in my closet for bumming around the house and one for running. It’s a cycle-when the running ones get old, they turn into my bum around the house shoes and my oldest shoes get recycled. I usually take my old shoes with me to my local running store because they recycle (donate) them and you get 10% off your next purchase. I’m a big believer in paying it forward when you can, even if it is just your old running shoes.
I was recently contacted by people on behalf of Allstate Life Insurance and Give Your Sole. They are a non-profit organization that will be collecting moderately used athletic shoes to donate to charity at the Allstate Life Insurance Atlanta 13.1 Marathon on Sunday, October 7th. I actually gave my running shoes to Give Your Sole at the Rock n Roll Chicago 1/2 marathon a few years ago before this blog existed. I love that they are partnering with races all over the country!
Race series sponsor Allstate® Life Insurance and Give Your Sole created the shoe donation platform as a means to give back to local communities around 13.1 Marathon® races across the country. In 2012, Allstate and Give Your Sole will collect shoes at five races through the program. At the race in Atlanta, the shoes will benefit the Gateway Center, an organization that helps homeless individuals in metro Atlanta move into transitional and permanent housing.
If you are in Atlanta, you can donate at several places over the next week.
