Before my stupid ankle sprain, Fall running was on my radar. I couldn’t wait for it to cool off and for “running season” to get here. Because let’s face it, running in the Summer can be pretty terrible. Fall, in my opinion, is the perfect time to run and race. Especially in the South. NO HUMIDITY. I had my calendar all planned out, and well, some if it will remain. But for those of you looking for a Georgia race, or will be in Atlanta this fall, here are a few to highlight.
The race takes you through the rolling hills of the Brookhaven neighborhood. The race is scheduled for October 7th and I am still registered. I am supposed to get my double medal for running the Publix 1/2 marathon back in March. This will end up being a week-of-the-race decision for me-but I recommend it. It’s not too large of a race, has a fun finish line party, and a medal that spins. Need I say more? Use the code BLING10OFF131 for $10 off.
If the half isn’t your speed just yet, they also have a 5K and a challenge to beat the Karhu bear.
The word Karhu mean’s ‘bear’ in Finnish, and the official shoe sponsor of the Allstate Life Insurance℠Atlanta 13.1 Marathon® invites runners to come out and try to “Beat the Karhu Bear.” The first 10 runners who “Beat the Karhu bear” during the 5K and cross the finish line before the bear, will be presented with a coupon good for a FREE pair of Karhu running shoes of their choice. Others who finish ahead of the Karhu Bear will receive a free Karhu t-shirt.
This race falls on my birthday weekend (October 13th and 14th)! I had considered it (yes, before the sprain) but it looks like trail running will have to wait even longer on my list of running accomplishments. The weekend includes several distances-a 50 miler, 50K, ,marathon, relay, half marathon, 10K, 5K and kids run. Yep. Something for literally everyone. The one thing to note though is that is technically not in Atlanta. It’s about 45 minutes to an hour south of the city in a little town called Pine Mountain. You can learn more below.
This race actually falls on my birthday too! And it’s in my hood. Which is why it gets included in the must run Fall list. It really is just a 4K with 4 beer stops at local bars. And you get a medal. Totally my kind of race for my birthday. Only downside? Me and P have plans to go out of town instead. If they change, THIS is what we are doing. Beer and running (and costumes)!!?!?! Yes, please!
I signed up for this race a while ago as well. I LOVE themes for races and dressing up. A Halloween race was much needed in Atlanta (we have some 5ks but this is better). This is the inaugural Atlanta race and it will be a pretty hilly course around the downtown area. There is also a 5K and a 10K and a pretty sweet medal. I am working on my costume and should be able to run this race.
That just covers a few local races that have stood out to me. There is still the Atlanta Track Club Marathon and Relay on October 27th and The Silver Comet Trail races on October 28th (known for being flat and fast). In November, the Atlanta Track Club puts on the Atlanta 1/2 Marathon on Thanksgiving Day and there is always the option to road trip it to Savannah for Savannah Rock n Roll too (November 3rd).
If you are headed to Atlanta this Fall, let me know! I’d love to run with you!
Is there a “running season” in your town? What is your favorite race in your city (maybe I’ll come see you)? Are you running any of these races here?
