To Marathon or Not?

Well.  The craziness that was my Winter/Spring running schedule is winding down.  Why?  Because the South is like a sauna this time of year and there aren’t many races further than a 10K to be found unless you hop on a plane. And, I didn’t win the lottery so that many flights to keep up my race addiction are out of the question.

I had originally thought my schedule would be empty after Big Sur.  And then I signed up for the Superhero 1/2 Marathon and got into Hood To Coast.

And within the past 3 days I signed up for a 10K in P’s hometown over Memorial Day, convinced him to run Muddy Buddy with me and Team NUUN in June, and was given the opportunity to run the Atlanta 13.1 in November.

But I still have the itch to knock off some more states and maybe marathon again in 2012.

I know I said in my Big Sur recap that there would be no more marathons this year.  And I really am leaning towards that.  Training for a marathon in the summer here is hell.  For reals.  And, I feel like my body and social life need a break.

Of course, sometimes I doubt myself and what I want to do.  I have hopes of qualifying for Boston one day and I am considering hiring a coach.  I get so excited reading everyones marathon recaps, especially from the Eugene Marathon, and I want to go big.  Get faster. Do more.  And soon.  I know I should slow it down though.  It was just 8 days ago I ran a marathon.

Sigh.

What to do, what to do.

Again, I lean towards no.  I think I would rather find 1 or 2 more travel races for the fall.    I’ve thought about the amish country, Bird in Hand 1/2 Marathon (thanks Runners World) and the Runner’s World 1/2 marathon races.  And possibly something in Kentucky or South Carolina (both are drivable).  This sounds more fun than 20 mile runs in 90 degree weather. :)  Have some fun.  Start planning the Winter/Spring marathon in the Fall instead.

Is it insane I already know the races I want to do in 2013?  Austin, Wisconsin 1/2 (or Indi Mini), Flying Pig, Portland.  Yep.  I’m crazy.

What do you think?  Take a break?  Finish out my 12 in 2012 goal and focus on my next marathon in 2013?  Or do another marathon? How far out do you plan your schedule?

  • I don't think I'm allowed to comment on this post :) I said no marathon this year and was convinced until about a week ago. My goal for this year was NOT to run a marathon and focus on speed instead. However nothing makes me faster than marathon training. So I gave in and signed up AGAIN!

  • I'm thinking I'm an idiot for signing up for my first marathon in september bc like you, how they hell am I supposed to train in this heat / humidity argh.

I'm looking at my november for halfs… you can join me!!!
So I've ran Wisconsin 1/2 (LOVED IT), ran the Flying Pig (LOT OF GREAT enthusiasm from spectators) and just got back from Portland and its HILLY (but gorgeous).

Even though I've crossed Indiana off my list, I have family there so I do want to eventually do the Mini :)

  • I feel your pain. I live in Phoenix, AZ and our race season is pretty much over until October/Novement. And like you, I'd have to travel outside the state to do any race over a 5k. I already have 2 half mary's scheduled for the fall (one in CA and one here in AZ)! I am already thinking/plotting my early 2013 race schedule.

I think you should focus on the goal you set for 2012 and achieve that. Just my 2 cents! :-)

  • That Bird in Hand half looks rad. I like that one.

I've got a bunch of my spring already planned. I can't help it. I'm a planner.

I for SURE wouldn't train for a full in the summer in GA. I will be at Disney in July (for Gab's trip!) and already plan to take that entire week off. No way, no how will I be running.
