Pilates, anyone?

So the last time I did pilates was, well, in 2000.  In my sorority chapter room.  With Denise.

Yes.  Ms. Austin.  Me and my sorority sisters would have pilates night and do this DVD together.  COMICAL.  Needless to say, I haven’t been to a pilates class since then.  Plenty of yoga.  LOVE yoga.  For some reason pilates just went to the back burner.

Thank you, again, Kim for “forcing” me to try something new.  Pilates is my New To Me Cross Training for February.

My friend (from TNT and twitter) Laura, is currently getting her pilates certification.  Lucky, lucky, lucky for me.  Class is currently free.  And did I mention it is one on one?  Sweet!!  Oh, and even bigger bonus?  The studio is less than a mile from my house.

My first class was actually last Wednesday. We did lots of basics and she taught me the proper form.  Who knew such small movements could hurt so much?  Laura said that my core was already pretty strong and that taking Pure Barre (way back before I bought my condo) taught me how to use the “right” part of my abs.

We also did several different stretches that are great for runners.

Today was my second class.  I’m so excited to be able to add this in to my regular workouts and Laura is such a great teacher.  She said that she has lost weight doing pilates and toned up which has been great for her running.  One of her instructors told her that the stronger your core the less you “use” your legs (even when running).

We did more work on the machines and several different stretches.  I should’ve written the names of the machines down but I didn’t…all I can remember is the reformer.  🙂

I look forward to having this class each week.  It is an insane ab workout–it really pays to have one on one time with an instructor to tell you exactly how you should be working your muscles.

Thank you again, Kim, for making me try something new.  Thank you, Laura, for giving me a new workout that I look forward to every week!

Have you tried Pilates?  Or Yoga?  Do you prefer one over the other?

  • I just found your blog from Laura posting about it! I did a little but of pilates for her when I came down and it seriously amazed me how little movements could hurt so much! Such a bonus that you are less than a mile away! 🙂

  • When I first started exercising in 2004, I did Pilates every day. Although I did the Winsor Pilates with whatever her name was. I think I still have the DVDs somewhere… I think pilates definitely makes your core stronger. Yoga is… mostly boring to me, but it does make me feel more limber.

  • Next you'll be breaking out the old Tae Bo & Buns of Steel?! I love yoga, can't run without it but have never really done pilates. Probably should to work on my core.

  • Circa 2000 I did pilates at least once a week and would swear it was better than yoga. A few years later…now I'm convinced yoga is better 🙂

I'd love to know what stretches work well for runners. I think not stretching enough and/or properly is one of the reasons for the soreness in my right quad.

  • Allan actually introduced me to pilates years ago but I admit it's been awhile since I've done it. Free pilates a mile away from home?! That sounds perfect! Glad you're enjoying classes so far!

  • Howdy – I'm over from Just Trying is for Little Girls . . trying to find ideas for my NTUCTC March activity. LOVE that you did Pilates. Would have loved to been a fly on the wall back on those sorority Pilates nights – had to be hilarious! The picture of the room with the machines makes them look sort of like torture devices. So excited you had such a great set of circumstances that allowed you to try Pilates. Can't wait to read all about your March NTUCTC activity.
Good job and keep up the good work!
