Rock ’n’ Roll Providence 1/2 Marathon Race Recap Part 1

I flew into Providence Friday morning.  Uneventful and easy.  I checked into the Renaissance Hotel (which I highly recommend for this race-1 block to the start and a great price) and then met up with one of my TNT friends Alison and some of her friends.  We went to lunch at Local 121 which was amazing-their menu only included food that was grown/caught within 121 miles of Providence.  Then it was Expo Time!

Packet Pickup/Expo
I love RNR expos.  They always have great vendors and are well organized and have wide aisles.  I don’t know if it was because we went early on the first day it was open or if the race is smaller than usual but it was empty.  The volunteers even let me switch out my shirt size which they NEVER do at this race series.  We also got tons of freebies-sports beans, deodorant, granola bars, larabars, and biofreeze stuff.  There was also a booth that had last seasons running gear on sale for 5 for $50.  I went in with the other girls and ended up with a Saucony reflective jacket for $10!!  Woohoo!!  I also got another Sweaty Band.  I cut myself off but I am coveting the orange and white polka dot running skirt from  It would be perfect for football season…
Not like your normal RNR expos…
It pays to go early and beat the crowds!

Rest of the afternoon/night

We did a little shopping around the downtown area and then went to dinner at Federal Hill.  It was good, nothing over the top, just good. The highlight was feeling like I was on an episode of the Jersey Shore or Sopranos.  I swear I saw a late night mob meeting just like Tony would have had in the back of a closed deli.  A bunch of Italian men gathered around….I was just playing out the whole scene in my head :):)
Alison & Myself in Providence
A view of the city

I waited for my friend Robert to get into town and spent the morning hitting different neighborhoods.  I enjoyed a great brunch to carb up…

yes, I ate almost all of this 🙂

Robert arrived and we went back to the expo.  Much more crowded this time.  I ended up buying an Auburn running shirt.  Still hoping for the skirt…We left and tried to get on a trolley tour of Providence but it was sold out.  So more neighborhood exploring.  Honestly, I didn’t find much in any of the neighborhoods.  If I were to ever come back (won’t happen but those of you interested in this race) I would take a day trip to Newport or even Martha’s Vineyard or possibly stay in Boston.

We ended the day with an amazing dinner at Al Forno.  Some of the best Italian I have ever had.  I rarely do dessert the night before a race but I couldn’t resist.  (sad to admit most of my pics I am sharing are of food 🙂  didn’t think yall would care to see pics of the oldest baptist church or signs explaining the history of the city)

Gnocchi with Tomato & Basil
Peach and Blueberry Tart…heaven!

Back to the hotel and time to relax before the 5:30 am wake up call.  Next up, race day and recap part 2!
