I’m gonna Run Less, Run Faster.

Well.  Figuring out this Run Less, Run Faster plan has taken me forever.  If you aren’t familiar, I encourage you to check it out.  You run 3 times a week with specific runs-speedwork, tempo, and a long run. Hitting the runs and the cross training seem to be key.  I will soon find out.

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you to the fabulous Alma. She was kind enough to email me her plan (she had to change hers in the middle of training and I wanted to see how she did it) and I made adjustments according to my schedule.

Here are the things that freak me out about the plan:

1.  I have a 5K, a 4 miler, a 10K and 2 1/2 marathons before the marathon.  It kinda screws up the schedule but that is life.  I think I adjusted accordingly.

2.  I hate cross training–well, swimming and biking (This will make me do it though).  I actually did the stationary bike today–and that is my only option for the month of June.  My new gym doesn’t open till the end of the month and I will attempt the rowing machine then.

3.  The entire training may be interrupted by another TNT event.  I won’t know for sure for a few more weeks but I am thinking I will start another season at the end of July.  We will be at short miles in the beginning but I don’t want to have to double up the runs–the point is to actually run less-not more, right?  I will, again, have to adjust if necessary.

4.  It is hot as hell in the South in the summer.  I hope I can get up early enough before work during the week to beat the heat. If not, I think that it will be hard to hit my times in 95 degree (or more) weather.

I had thought about only doing the 1/2 marathon plan for RNR Providence but I think that if I follow the marathon plan I will still improve my 1/2 time too.

I can’t figure out how to share my plan on here…perhaps soon!  If anyone knows how to share from iworks let me know.

  • Good luck with RLRF! I've used it for 3 years now and it's been wonderful for me. Yes you must get up and out before the heat if you wanna hit your paces. Either that or the mill.

  • I hope you have fun with the program! As for the races that interfere w/ the plan, it's tough. I have passed up several races I wanted to do because they didn't fit into my plan. I've been strict I guess. But one thing I'll do this summer is switch my track/tempo/long run days around to accommodate shorter races. I think I may do some mid-week long runs so I can use shorter weekend races as my weekly tempo run. Hopefully that will work out.
