Racing Local…Again

It’s a big weekend here in Atlanta!  The GA Publix Marathon and 1/2 Marathon are this weekend (formerly part of the ING series).  I haven’t run a 1/2 in Atlanta since November of 2009 and it still doesn’t really feel like I am running one this weekend.  Maybe its because it’s home, maybe because I have just gotten used to racing, maybe it’s because I have just been so busy and Big Sur has been my “real” focus.  Regardless, I am really excited for several reasons.

ONE
I “get” running.  Two years ago, I was clueless.  I didn’t even know what a Corral meant, much less a chip time or why I needed four safety pins.  I truly remember wondering why they handed me four safety pins at packet pickup two years ago.  I got to the start line and literally just took off.  Hoping to have a good time but not really understanding how to pace myself.  I was so excited to look up at mile 7 where my sister was going to be and seeing my Dad there cheering me on as a surprise; I literally teared up!  I remember the aches and pains that came on around mile 10.  I thought I was going to die at mile 10-we were passing where I lived and I thought about just stopping.  I wondered what the hell I had gotten myself into and why do people do this for fun (that all obviously changed after crossing the finish line and receiving a shiny piece of bling).  Things have definitely changed.  The ING 1/2 led me to a whole new life.  A passion.  And I will hopefully end up running at least 8 races this year.

TWO
I have a running “family” now.  I am part of a running community.  I have gotten to know so many different people that all love what I love.  I volunteered at the expo today and I saw tons of familiar faces-my regular peeps from Big Peach, other runners, and of course, my favorite part of my running family-TNT.  I will be meeting up with DailyMilers for pasta at lunch tomorrow and Half Fanatics before the race for a group picture, and hopefully Jill.

THREE
My favorite charity will be there!  Since this is a local race, there will be a TON of purple on the course because we have a big team from TNT.  We have over 200 participants (that raised $250,000) and who knows how many alumni running, so I know this will be lots of fun.  And…I get to run with a lot of the Big Sur team and wear my TNT tutu. :):) WOOT!

FOUR

New Runners trying out the sport.  My good friend Kristin is running her first 1/2 marathon!!  I have mentioned her on here before and I can’t believe it’s already time for her to run her big race.  She is tied into my #3 reason for being excited because not only is it her first race, it is her first event with TNT.  And being the rockstar that Kristin is, she is a top 10 fundraiser and won a free night at the Ritz Hotel Downtown and invited me to stay with her.  I will be attending the Inspiration Pasta Dinner with her and getting up with her on race day.  I can’t wait to cheer her on as she crosses the finish line.  It is such a good feeling!!

It’s gonna be a fun weekend.  Anyone else racing?

  • It sounds like you're going to have a great weekend! I have a trail race this weekend – I expect to be slow, because I cannot afford an injury, but it should be a fun (and gorgeous!) run!

  • Hope your weekend was fantastically fun!!!

    Trail Putty:
½ cup of peanut butter (or almond butter YUM!)
    2 tablespoons of honey
    2 ½ tablespoons of non-fat powdered milk
½ cup of raisins (or chocolate chips YUM!)
Mix all ingredients in a bowl and then roll into a log. Coat the log (I said log again, hehe) with coconut or grated chocolate. Chill logs in the fridge and then wrap in plastic.
